Online events about gendered energy poverty

Date of publication: 15 May 2025

On the 5th of March, 2025, Ana Stojilovska and Sára Szabó were part of the largest multi-lingual Pan-European Online Event on energy poverty, right to energy, and women in Europe. This was part of the ongoing WISE (Women in Solidarity for Energy) project, supported by the European Union and European Climate Foundation. The event marked the end of the 28-day-long Language Solidarity campaign, with over 200 participants.

The plenary sessions were followed by language-based sessions. Sára co-moderated the Hungarian session. The session explored Hungary’s socio-political context of energy poverty and gender inequality, focusing on weak legal protections around disconnections, inadequate seasonal safeguards, and harmful reliance on poor-quality heating. Ana participated in the session on Macedonian language which highlighted how women’s unequal household roles reflect broader societal inequality, stressing the need for gender-sensitive support, informal education, targeted aid for single mothers, and empowered municipalities to bridge national and local efforts.

On the 15th of March was the follow-up online and final Pan-European Event about the language of energy rights and solidarity visited by 80 participants. Ana Stojilovska delivered a presentation highlighting the often-overlooked "hidden drivers" of energy poverty, such as the power imbalance between utilities and consumers, how disconnections severely impact well-being, and have sparked protests and social movements that amplify marginalized voices, especially women’s.
