CALLS FOR PAPERS ON
“Control”
Control is a broad concept. Arguably, it is a practice of influencing others’ motivations, decisions and actions, yet characteristically in a non-violent way, mostly not even threatening with force. Norms are paradigmatic form of control, but norms are themselves often subject to re-formation, change or interpretation, opening other possibilities of control. It appears that control is once again an acute issue in social sciences. The current pandemic has shown how the real or perceived loss of control has conjured up old fears and worries, but also how states and governments have been trying to seize or increase control over various processes in the economy and society. Consequently, worries about overcontrol, the emergence of new surveilling states and of self-observing individuals have also been reinforced. In international relations and global politics, the fear of losing control over the disease, but also over the climate change, has been coupled with fears (and hopes) that former controlling mechanisms, or powers having a vested interest in a controlled order, has been spreading. In the world economy, the questions of who controls (governments, firms, sectors, cartels), what and how, are discussed with similar motivations.
The Doctoral School of International Relations and Political Science of the Corvinus University of Budapest invites papers for a postgraduate online conference related to the topic of control. Contributions are expected to address the issues raised above. Theoretical, empirical, model-based, analytical and normative approaches are all welcome from fields of political science, international relations, geopolitics, global political economy, and security studies. Papers to be presented will be selected based on the quality of the submitted abstract. Discussions will take place in small panels with pre-prepared comments by discussants. The conference will be the sixth in the series organized by the Doctoral School.
Date of the conference: 11 December 2020
